Agreed on the marketing of movies--does it really help sell a movie if you feel like you've already figured it out from the trailer? I've avoided some really worthwhile movies because of lousy trailers. I know that movies that aren't monster hits are really hurting right now but trailers have been a problem for a long time (also there are too many before the show begins!!).
Yeah it’s like a chicken and egg thing because I genuinely think the studios believe it is the only way people will see the movies. Yet, they don’t realize it is actually a major turn off. I do everything I can to avoid them, but to do so you have to show up to every movie in theaters 20-30 minutes late!
What was your issue with the on-screen text before the film? Doesn’t it just say that it is based entirely on their memories?
I avoided most of the trailers for Sinners. It’s a bummer how you can’t watch trailers these days without getting a movie ruined. Same thing happened to me with Drop
There are a shots/setups in the film that could not have been from the soldiers’ memories, such as the first time we meet the family as they are scrambling behind a door/wall. Commit to the conceit or don’t offer it.
Good point. I guess I saw that more as where Garland’s anti-war stance comes in to feel gaps. But totally see how you’ve got a problem with that! Good catch
I believe exceptional movies are mainly found in independent films these days. Big studios don't want to take risks anymore, but independent cinema explores many themes and genres. Adding these to my watch list!

I would have enjoyed Warfare—and respected its supposed antiwar stance—more without the on-screen text before and after the feature.
I also need to rewatch Sinners because outside of the dance sequence I do not understand the hype. And talk about a trailer that gives too much away!
